After 37 years of existing as sister cities, the Rotary clubs of Yanahuara-Arequipa in Peru and Charlotte, North California, U.S.A. undertook a joint project. They received a matching grant of US$ 9,135.71 from The Rotary Foundation to teach 500 very poor adults (mainly women) how to read and write, do elementary math and accomplish basic task to improve self-esteem, such as weaving and sewing. Assistance was provided by members of the Rotaract Club of Instituto Superior Pedagogico de Arequipa.
